Within the framework of a physical start-up implementation, the first LEU-fuel has been loaded into IVG.1M Reactor.

On March 31, 2022, the first technological channel with low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel has been successfully loaded at the Complex of Research Reactors “Baikal-1”, Institute of Atomic Energy Branch of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

 The event was preceded by a huge work cycle that began back in 2010, which included computational and analytical justification of conversion feasibility, testing of experimental LEU-fuel, manufacturing and supply of standard LEU-fuel.

After completion of the stages of the physical start-up of the reactor and subsequent energy one, which include experimental determination of all required characteristics of the new core, the updated IVG.1M reactor will be ready for commissioning.

Implementation of the stated work is scheduled for 2022-2023.
