Technical Meeting with Japanese specialists under Cormit-II Project

In the framework of CORMIT-II International Project implementation, which is carried out jointly with Japanese Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, on October 9 and 10, 2019, a regular planned meeting between technical specialists of Japan and Kazakhstan was held. According to the Agreement for 2019-2020, it is planned to perform 2 large-scaled and 8 small-scaled experiments. As a result of meeting,  Japanese colleagues reviewed VCG-135 and LAVA-B experimental facilities and technological systems of ANGARA test-bench. Japanese and Kazakhstani experts from the Institute of Atomic Energy discussed results of RT-8 test carried out in January 2019 and technical conditions for future 9-12 experiments of RT-series.

The CORMIT-II Project is aimed at studying the interaction between molten core materials (corium) of light-water nuclear reactor and refractory materials in case of severe accident. Joint work of Kazakhstani and Japanese specialists lies in implementation of series of experimental and material research of results of a contact between corium and different refractory materials (such as zirconium dioxide and alumina) under conditions of residual energy release simulation in corium. The whole practical part of research is carried out at experimental basis of the Institute of Atomic Energy Branch. The large-scale experiments are carried out at the LAVA-B facility of ANGARA test-bench, the small-scaled tests – at the VCG-135 facility. All facilities are located within the territory of the Complex of Research Reactors “Baikal-1”.
