In-pile experiment

In the framework of the National Budget Program “Development of Nuclear Energy in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2018 – 2020” employees of the Department for Development and Testing of Reactor Devices, IAE Branch RSE NNC RK, prepare for in-pile experiment, the purpose of which is to study the corium cooling efficiency moved to the cavity under the reactor with a limited amount of coolant and in residual energy release conditions.

The in-pile experiment is planned to be carried out at the Complex of the Research Reactor IGR using experimental device containing fuel assembly with mass of about 5 kg and coolant (sodium) with mass of about 15 kg.

Obtained experimental data will be used for development of core constructions of advanced fast neutron nuclear reactors, with internal self-defense properties in order to eliminate re-criticality and destruction of protective reactor vessels during the development of severe accidents with fuel melting.
