International Conference on Nuclear Materials (NuMat 2024), Singapore

From 14-17 October 2024, International Conference on Nuclear Materials (NuMat 2024) was held in Singapore.

NuMat is the largest international conference and leading platform for the experts, who study develop and characterize materials for nuclear and fusion energy technologies. The biennial conference covers broad topics of interest to the nuclear materials community, including nuclear fuel, structural materials, and fundamental and applied radiation effects in metals, ceramics, polymers and functional materials.

The Institute of Atomic Energy Branch of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan (IAE NNC RK) was represented by Yuri Gordienko, Head of In-Channel Test Laboratory, IAE NNC RK and Kuanysh Samarkhanov, Researcher of In-Channel Test Laboratory, IAE NNC RK.

Yuri Gordienko presented the results of experimental study of high-temperature corrosion processes of functional materials of solid-state breeder blankets of fusion reactors, in particular, a binary intermetallic compound based on beryllium, titanium beryllide Be12Ti, under blowing conditions in an inert environment containing various concentrations of chemically active impurities. The studies presented at the conference were supported by the grant funding project of the MSHE RK on the topic “High-temperature testing of functional materials of solid-state breeder blankets of fusion reactors in various gas environments” (Grant number AP14870785).

Kuanysh Samarkhanov presented the results of the development and optimization of the technology for immobilization of highly enriched irradiated uranium-graphite fuel from the IGR reactor. The studies presented at the conference were performed under the target-oriented financing on the topic “Research in support of the creation and safe operation of a nuclear power plant in the Republic of Kazakhstan (IRN BR21882185).

Overall, the high level was noted and the presented studies received positive feedback. I would like to note the high level of organization of the event, the professional and individual approach to each participant, and an exciting and interesting conference program, the most interesting plenary and sectional reports.
