Final stage of work on packaging and transportation of fresh highly enriched uranium-graphite fuel of the IGR reactor
The final stage of packaging and transportation of fresh highly enriched uranium-graphite fuel of the IGR reactor was successfully completed. The fuel was delivered to the Ulba Metallurgical Plant for further enrichment reducing. The work was carried out as part of the Russian Research Reactor Fuel Return Program (RRRFR) implementation of the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Safety Administration supporting by Idaho National Laboratory (INL). It should be reminded that at the sidelines of the 63rd Session of the IAEA General Conference held from 16 to 20 September,2019 in Vienna (Austria), a Joint Statement was signed by the K. Bozumbayev, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty, the Deputy Minister for Nuclear Safety of the US Department of Energy and the Administrator of the National Nuclear Safety Administration regarding the plans for joint work on disposal of highly enriched uranium in the Republic of Kazakhstan. All these events are intended to enhance world security in terms of non-nuclear material proliferation and confirm the peaceful course of development of our country set by N.A. Nazarbayev, the Leader of the Nation.
