Participation in an International Seminar on SNF and RW Management

On November 13-14, 2025, Astana hosted a seminar on nuclear fuel cycle infrastructure and the management of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste (RW). The event brought together experts form CIS countries, IAEA specialists, and representatives from regulatory and industry bodies in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Armenia.

During the seminar, participants discussed the approaches of CIS member states to developing national policies for the SNF and RW management, as well as key issues related to strategic planning and the advancement of modern technologies in this field.

Particular focus was on international safety standards, best practices in radioactive waste management, and regulatory frameworks across the CIS.

Representatives from the RSE NNC RK participated in the seminar:

  • Vitaly Pospelov, Head of the Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Power Development Department at the “Institute of Atomic Energy” branch, who presented the report Management of Spent Fuel from the BN-350 Reactor”;
  • Yuliya Baklanova, Head of the Materials Testing Department at the “Institute of Atomic Energy” branch, who presented the report Current Concept for the SNF Management from the RSE NNC RK Research Reactors”.

The seminar concluded with proposals to strengthen cooperation on SNF management within the CIS Working Group, to be reflected in a jointly prepared document.
