Atomic energy and thermonuclear fusion in the focus of the experts’ attention

The IX International Conference “Semipalatinsk Test Site: Heritage and Prospects for the Development of Scientific and Technical Potential”, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Semipalatinsk Test Site closure was held in Kurchatov.

Over the years, the International Conference has become a traditional forum where scientists and experts from different countries can fruitfully discuss topical issues about development of atomic energy, nuclear physics, radioecology,   nuclear and radiation methods in medicine and industry.

This year the Conference was conducted from 7 to 9 September online with the participation of more than 250 specialists of scientific organizations, research institutes, universities and enterprises from more than 20 countries of the world.

The work of two sections was conducted on the basis of the branch “Institute of atomic energy”. About 70 people – representatives of major scientific centers of Kazakhstan, Russia, the USA, Japan, France, Belarus, Belgium-took part in the work of the section “Current trends and prospects for the development of atomic energy”. More than 30 presentations were done.

The participants of the section discussed the results of a wide range of scientific research related to the development and use of research nuclear facilities, the safety of atomic energy, radiation materials science, advanced energy materials and the management of SNF and RW. It was noticed that the major efforts of the world scientific community in the field of atomic energy development currently are aimed at developing the most safe, efficient and economically competitive nuclear reactor projects, as well as at improving the safety of currently operating nuclear power plants.

During the work of the section “Technologies of controlled thermonuclear fusion”, specialists considered various aspects of research related to the development and use of controlled thermonuclear fusion installations, the use of structural and functional materials of the TNR, physical, technical and engineering aspects of the CTF. As you know, this subject is particularly relevant and in demand today in connection with the construction of ITER.

About 40 people took part in the work of the section, 22 reports were given.

We should note high scientific and experimental level of reports, audience interest, comprehensive answers on concerned questions and a friendly atmosphere, in general.
