Workshop on Nuclear Forensics PDF Print E-mail

On April 23-26, the Institute of Atomic Energy RSE NNC RK was visited by American delegation of the National Nuclear Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE/NNSA) accompanied by a representative of the U.S. Embassy in RK. The delegation also included specialists for detection and deterrence of nuclear smuggling.

The workshop on the Analysis of Nuclear Forensics Provisions and Development of National Nuclear Forensics Library was held within the joint work, where personnel of the Institute of Atomic Energy and specialists of the NAC Kazatomprom JSC participated.

During the workshop, American specialists presented a number of areas of U.S. DOE program for detection and deterrence of nuclear smuggling. In particular, U.S. DOE specialists shared the experience of nuclear materials smuggling counteraction, described the organization of work of the National Nuclear Security Administration, as well as architecture and principles of work of the National Nuclear Forensics Library. The U.S. side expressed its intention to provide methodical and practical support to the Kazakhstan organizations concerned, including NNC RK, in creation of a similar national library in RK. A suggestion was made regarding future cooperation of scientists, researchers and interested agencies of RK and USA.

In the frame work of the visit, U.S. specialists visited a number of laboratories of the Institute of Atomic Energy, as well as Complexes of Research Reactors “Baikal-1”, and IGR, “Opytnoye Pole” site and others.

As a part of the visit, the delegation visited museum of the former Semipalatinsk Test Site, where members of delegation left their notes in the distinguished visitors’ book.

Following the meeting and the workshop, the U.S.side commended the equipment of the IAE’s laboratories, the competence level of our employees. The workshop and related events took place in the work atmosphere, and the results of joint work allow looking forward to continue fruitful cooperation between specialists and administrations of two countries regarding the issues of the nuclear material smuggling counteraction.
