Monitoring of sewage and ground water at the ICMP

Since 2004, the Institute of Atomic Energy Branch of the RSE NNC RK has been realizing activities on examination of radiation conditions of the territory of former Irtysh Chemical-Metallurgical Plant (ICMP) and adjusting territories.

In August 2020, in order to monitor sewage and ground water, the IAE took 31 samples from control points according to the Sampling Map. The samples were taken from the boreholes and open water reservoirs within the studied ICMP territories. The samples were transported by special vehicles to the Radiometry and Spectrometry Division to make laboratory radiochemical and spectrometric analysis.

In September, laboratory radiochemical and spectrometric analysis of ground water samples was conducted in order to determine the content of natural radionuclides – 234Th, 226Ra, 210Pb, 235U, 227Ac, 228Ra, 228Th, 40K, 238U, 232Th and artificial radionuclide 137Cs.

Comparison analysis of data previously received on concentration of determined radionuclides was carried out.
